Why design them together

The view out of a room is part of that room. Where the interior and the landscape are designed separately, the join between them is usually where both give up: a set of doors onto a lawn that nobody thought about, and a terrace positioned where the sun is not.

Designed together, that transition becomes the best part of the house — a courtyard that extends a narrow London kitchen, or a pool terrace that a rear elevation is composed around rather than pointed at.

What we take on

Gardens and terraces at whatever scale the site offers, from a walled courtyard behind a London terrace to the grounds of a house in Virginia or Maryland. Planting, hard landscaping, levels, boundaries, outdoor rooms and the way each is lit after dark.

Levels and drainage tend to decide more than planting does, and they are the hardest things to revisit later. We would rather spend an early conversation on how water leaves the site, and on how you actually get from the back door to the far end of the garden, than on a plant list.

The smaller the space or the more complicated the problem, the greater the need for imaginative solutions — as true outside as in.

Landscape design is available as a standalone commission, or as part of a full-service interior engagement. Travel to study spaces, structures and historic buildings informs both — we draw on those experiences to interpret the most abstract and remote possibilities.
