Virginia houses tend to give you what a D.C. row house cannot: floor area, a garden, and elevations that see daylight on more than two sides. That changes the brief. Instead of fighting for volume, the question becomes how to stop a large house feeling like a series of unrelated rooms — how relative scale and form add up to something coherent rather than merely big.

With the client’s lifestyle as the north star, the aim is a house that is luxurious and genuinely functional: rooms sized for what actually happens in them, and circulation that does not waste the space it passes through.

Interiors and landscape considered together

Maple is trained in both interior and landscape design, which matters more here than in the city. Where a house has real grounds, the view out of each room is part of that room, and the transition between inside and outside is worth designing rather than defaulting to a set of doors.

We are happy to take on the interior alone, the landscape alone, or both together.

Working from Washington, D.C.

Our completed portfolio is concentrated in the District and in London; Virginia projects are served from the D.C. studio, close enough for the regular site presence that renovation work needs.

For renovation work that proximity matters more than it might sound. The questions that come up mid-build rarely wait, and answering them properly usually means standing in the room rather than looking at a photograph of it.
