Interior Design in London
London is where the studio started. Maple trained at the Inchbald School of Design and practised here — taking on residential remodels and consulting with architects on renovations in Surrey — before returning to the United States. MAK99 has taken London work ever since.
Reworking London's housing stock
Most of what we are asked to do in London involves a house that is a century or more old, laid out for a way of living nobody practises any more: a warren of small rooms, a dark middle, and a kitchen pushed to the back as an afterthought. Reimagining spaces in homes that old is not for the fainthearted — they serve up unexpected challenges once you open them up.
The moves that tend to unlock these houses are structural rather than decorative. Reducing the number of small rooms. Extending at the rear. Enlarging windows and adding glazing so light reaches further into the plan. At Roehampton that combination turned a dated family house into a connected, light-filled home without losing the character that made it worth buying.
Small footprints, imaginative solutions
London houses are narrow, and the ones worth saving are rarely square. That constraint is the interesting part of the work: the smaller the space or the more complicated the problem, the greater the need for an imaginative solution. Bespoke joinery does a lot of the load-bearing here — a window seat with drawers beneath it, a bookcase that turns a dead corridor into a room, storage tucked into the void under a staircase.
Careful consideration is given to how relative scale and form affect the result, and to reaching a refined finish. The aim is a house that feels generous, whatever the floor area says.

The best results come when we are engaged with the client and the architect or contractor at the conceptual stage, before layouts are fixed — that is when ergonomics and design are most effectively conveyed, and when changes are still cheap.
